Trey Yesavage delivered a performance for the ages and Schneider connected for a homer on the opening pitch as the Toronto Blue Jays topped the Dodgers six to one on Wednesday, moving within one victory of their first title since 1993.
The young Yesavage, who made his major league debut in September, recorded 12 strikeouts and zero walks – achieving a historic World Series first. The rookie right-hander allowed one run on three hits across seven innings. He started the season in Class A before sparse crowds, but has now earned two starting wins in the series in this seven-game set.
Toronto’s hitters gave him breathing room almost immediately. On the initial throw, Schneider drilled a 97-mile-per-hour heater and homered to left field. Two pitches later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr added a second home run to a similar location. It marked the historic first for the Fall Classic that the game began with two straight homers, shocking the spectators before most had settled in.
Yesavage then took over. He struck out five consecutive batters between the second and third innings, establishing a new rookie mark before Kiké Hernández finally broke the streak with a home run in the bottom of the third to make it two to one. That was the nearest the Dodgers came.
In the fourth, Varsho lined a triple into the right-field corner after a misplay, and Ernie Clement hit a sac fly to bring him home for a three to one lead. The Dodgers’ offensive struggles deepened from there. After scoring six runs in Monday’s 18-inning marathon, they’ve scored a mere four times in nearly 30 innings.
The starting pitcher battled through six and two-thirds innings but exited in the seventh after the Blue Jays loaded the bases. Both runners he left behind came around to score – one on a wild pitch and another on an RBI single – to extend the lead to 5–1. A hit in the eighth provided the final margin.
Yesavage was cheered off the field from the Blue Jays supporters, and the relievers finished the job. The late-inning pitchers each pitched an inning without allowing a run to end the game, recording three strikeouts together while preserving the rookie’s masterpiece.
The Dodgers, who shuffled their lineup in search of a spark, again found little traction. Their top hitter went hitless in four at-bats and is now hitless in seven at-bats since a record-setting on-base performance in the third game.
Now leading the series three games to two, Toronto return home with two chances to clinch. Game 6 is Friday night at Rogers Centre.
