Significant Online Outage Affects Many Websites and Apps

An extensive web failure has disrupted dozens online platforms and apps around the world, with users reporting issues getting online due to difficulties at Amazon’s web hosting service.

The disrupted platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-owned services such as its key e-commerce site and the Ring security device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected as well as its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of problems using the the tax authority website on the start of the week. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring customers took to online platforms to complain their home gadgets were failing.

In the UK alone, accounts of issues on specific apps reached the thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the problem started in the Atlantic coast of the US at the cloud division, a section that supplies vital web backbone for many companies, who utilize space on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest online services service.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the US (8am BST), officials reported “higher error rates and delays” for the cloud services in a area on the east coast of the America. The cascading impact seemed to hit apps globally, and the outage tracking website reporting problems with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on online failures, also reported a increase in problems on the start of the week, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the issues began.
