Previous FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a legislative process.
His legal representative filed the plea representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple factors including that his the accused, a critic of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was formally accused shortly after Trump pushed his top legal official to take action against him.
During the hearing on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald told the court they aimed to submit various motions to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to assume control of the proceedings.
Mr Comey's case was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his investigation into another political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.
James Comey seemed in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his spouse, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.
Upon hearing to the judge state his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he grasped the charges.
"I do your honour. Thank you," he stated to the proceedings.
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's first administration as president. At the period, the director was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.
Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was investigating Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a private email server. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he provided false information to the upper house by saying he had not approved an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets data about the government examinations.
Prosecutors also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to influence, block and delay" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
Via social media James Comey published to his social media after he was charged, he said he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".
"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are costs to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "So let's have a trial."
These allegations against the former director came after Donald Trump posted on digital channels insisting on his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute Mr Comey and others.
